There’s Water Everywhere…YIKES! This can be a very stressful situation for home and business owners alike, however, understanding what you should (and should not) do following a water damage emergency can help reduce the amount of damage sustained, reduce costs, and help protect your property from the risk of secondary damages.  When the damages are caused by clean water, you have a better opportunity to repair vs replace, and can take more action until help arrives.  SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County suggests the following emergency tips for dealing with clean water damages:

DO:

  1. CALL SERVPRO for help! Our team of highly trained and experienced professionals is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to respond to you water damage emergency.
  2. Shut off the source of water if possible.
  3. Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  4. Wipe excess water from wood furniture and cabinetry.
  5. Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  6. Hang draperies with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet carpeting or floors.
  7. Remove to a safe, dry place any paintings, artwork, computers, documents, and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture.

DO NOT:

  1. Enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.
  2. Leave books, newspapers, or other colored items on wet carpeting or floors.
  3. Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet.
  4. Enter rooms where ceiling is sagging from retained water.
  5. Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water.
  6. Leave rugs on wet wall-to-wall carpeting as this may cause staining.
